Euphoria

Euphoria is part of the Utopia painting series.

This artwork is my interpretation of the theme of utopia reflected in my experience of migration. Growing up in Ghana, I became aware of colourism, in which people with lighter skin tones were regarded as being more conventionally beautiful. This reflects an inferiority complex amongst African people, under the impact of colonialism, which imagines Western societies as a utopian paradise, where there is no discrimination or injustice.  Utopia in my painting is also a projection of how I imagine the world should be, reinterpreting traditional creation myths but emphasising notions of the divine feminine.
